In the beginning, there are many others, but they are cold and far away. You shine for them, do your utmost to entice them toward you, but to no avail. Over eons, some sidle a little nearer, others move away as if repelled, but none ever comes close enough for you to know their face.
Eventually, you realize there are other bodies in the sky, close and friendly enough to answer your call. If they don't shine coldly or at all, what of it? Your nine partners dance with you, as none of those others ever would. All is well.
